Child Screening & Assessment

ELC of Flagler VolusiaResearch shows that the first 5 years of life are crucial in a child’s development and set the stage for later years. In order to maximize child’s success in school and to meet states mandates, the ELCFV in partnership with parents and Early Childhood Educators provide free Developmental Screening services to all children enrolled in School Readiness programs.

Screening

A screening is a quick process/snap shot of a child’s development and may include the following: developmental, hearing and vision screening. It identifies if a child may need additional services. As stated in the Provider Contract for Flagler & Volusia, a teacher may be asked to complete a screening on a child receiving School Readiness services within seven (7) days of ELCFV’s request. Training on the Screening instrument are offered quarterly.

Assessment

An Assessment is a more detailed/in-depth look at a child’s development. It will be completed by Early Childhood Educators twice a year, in September and again in April to measure growth (per state mandate). The primary goals of child assessment are to help ensure children are progressing along the development path toward school readiness and to assist with program planning and evaluation. To comply with the Provider Contract for Flagler & Volusia, providers will be required to attend training on Child Assessment, upon request of ELCFV. Providers may be asked to complete a child assessment and will need to do so within thirty (30) days of the request. A significant sample of School Readiness children will be selected for participation in child assessment process, as mandated by the Florida Statute Chapter 411.

Screening and Assessments services are only conducted with parental consent. Results of Screening and Assessment are communicated to parents and Early Childhood Educators.

Please check ELCFV’s Training calendar for Screening and Assessment training availability.
